What is it?

A celebration of a girls fifteenth birthday, marking her passage from childhood to womanhood. Or in a boy's case, his passage into manhood. THIS IS NOT A SACRAMENT.

Many Catholic families request a Church celebration of thanksgiving for the life and faith of a young girl or boy crowned by God's blessing. This is seen as a significant cultural ritual within the Hispanic community that solidifies the girl or boy's commitment to her or his faith. Parents, relatives, and friends ask God to pour his blessings and protection onto the young girl or boy as she or he matures into a young woman or man.

Arrangements with the Church

You may set a date with the church office 6 months to a year in advance during the months of July to December. Usually celebrated on a Saturday. Occasionally can be programmed during the week. Cannot be programmed for Sundays.

You will receive copies of the liturgies at the time you make your arrangements with the office. It is your responsibility to assign 2 family members or friends to learn and read the liturgies for the celebration.

The Ceremony

The young girl receives Holy Communion, makes an act of consecration to the Virgin Mary, gifts the Virgin Mary with a bouquet of flowers, and receives gifts that are blessed by the priest such as a ring, a tiara or a necklace.

Come the day of the celebration, escorted by her parents or guardians, the Quinceañera leads the walk into church traditionally followed by her padrinos, the Chambelan and her court of honor.

A priest greets the Quinceañera at the altar where a designated chair and kneeler are placed.

Unlike a typical Sunday mass where the biblical reading are directed for the entire congregation, in a Quinceañera mass the reading is made, for the most part, directly to the celebrated.

Themes of youth, eternal love to God, becoming a strong woman, and remaining true to her religion against all adversity are customary topics for a Quinceañera celebration.

Padrinos and the court

It is not necessary to have padrinos for your Quinceañera.

Traditionally, the padrinos are chosen for various parts of the celebration. Such as decór, the event hall, food, drinks and gifts.

Their main role is to help keep the young girl on a path of spirituality and guide her into becoming a positive contributor to her community. So it is ideal that they be a married couple to serve as mentors for the young girl.

It is up to the parents and Quinceañera to decide whether she wants to be accompanied by a chambelan and if they wants a court at all.

Symbolism

Following the first gospel, the priest blesses the traditional Quinceañera elements (gifts) and makes reference to the Bible and rosary as symbolizing the eternal word of God.

Examples of these elements are:

A crown or tiara, representing how God sees the Quinceañera as a princess, his daughter, a King.

A natural bouquet of flowers to offer to the Virgin Mary (An artificial one is kept by the Quinceañera.

The Bible and rosary, both foundations of her faith.

Ring, symbolizing unconditional love from God.

Rehearsal

A day or few days before the celebration. Parents, it is your responsibility to ensure all members of the party arrive at practice at least 15 minutes before it begins.

Decorations

Keep in mind that during the liturgical times, such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Holy Week, additional decorations are not permitted in the Church. During these times, the church decorations are in accordance with the spirit of that particular liturgical time and, at most, other decorations are not necessary. Please keep this in mind when you are deciding on the date and colors of your wedding.

When it is permitted to have additional flowers, they can be placed on the floor in front of the Altar, to the left or right of the altar steps. DO NOT place flowers in the sanctuary in any manner that obstructs who presides or the ceremony or the members participating in the celebration. It is not permitted UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, that floral ornaments be placed on the altar.

No additional candles or candelabra are permitted. After the ceremony, you should leave natural flower arrangements for Sunday mass. Except for artificial flowers.

Throwing flower petals (real or artificial), throwing rice or birdseed, and rugs are not permitted for safety reasons. A slip in these materials could cause a serious fall or injury.

Photography

Photographers and cameramen are welcome if they can respect the sanctity of the ceremony. To clarify the specific rules, organize a meeting with the pastor and your photographer at the rehearsal or before the celebration. To be clear there is no exclusivity of photographers.

The location of the photographer and his/her equipment should be in only one place and not moving about the church. Photographers are not permitted in the sanctuary (altar). Do not block the aisles.

Bright Lamps, lights and use of a camera's flash are not permitted during the celebration. No posing for photos during the celebration.

You are permitted 20 minutes to take photos of the people after the ceremony. Let's remember that there are other events that follow yours and time is needed to prepare for their time.

Please deliver these requirements to your photographer and camera person. This will eliminate any confusion at the last moment of the appropriate place and time to take photographs.

Music

A list of available authorized choirs is available to you at the church office. It is necessary that you request one of these choirs as they know the appropriate liturgical cantor and songs for the parts of the mass. Non-religious music is not permitted, for example the nuptial march, etc.

This is a personal arrangement between you and the choir.
